TTreeReader Class Reference

A simple, robust and fast interface to read values from ROOT columnar datasets such as TTree, TChain or TNtuple.

TTreeReader is associated to TTreeReaderValue and TTreeReaderArray which are handles to concretely access the information in the dataset.

Example code can be found in

  • tutorials/io/tree/hsimpleReader.C
  • tutorials/analysis/tree/h1analysisTreeReader.C
  • An example in roottest showing the full power here.

You can generate a skeleton of TTreeReaderValue<T> and TTreeReaderArray<T> declarations for all of a tree's branches using TTree::MakeSelector().

A simpler analysis example can be found below: it histograms a function of the px and py branches.

// A simple TTreeReader use: read data from hsimple.root (written by hsimple.C)
#include "TFile.h"
#include "TH1F.h"
#include "TTreeReader.h"
void hsimpleReader() {
// Create a histogram for the values we read.
TH1F("h1", "ntuple", 100, -4, 4);
// Open the file containing the tree.
TFile *myFile = TFile::Open("$ROOTSYS/tutorials/hsimple.root");
// Create a TTreeReader for the tree, for instance by passing the
// TTree's name and the TDirectory / TFile it is in.
TTreeReader myReader("ntuple", myFile);
// The branch "px" contains floats; access them as myPx.
TTreeReaderValue<Float_t> myPx(myReader, "px");
// The branch "py" contains floats, too; access those as myPy.
TTreeReaderValue<Float_t> myPy(myReader, "py");
// Loop over all entries of the TTree or TChain.
while (myReader.Next()) {
// Just access the data as if myPx and myPy were iterators (note the '*'
// in front of them):
myHist->Fill(*myPx + *myPy);
}
myHist->Draw();
}

Create / open a file.
Definition TFile.cxx:3787
1-D histogram with a float per channel (see TH1 documentation)
Definition TH1.h:878
An interface for reading values stored in ROOT columnar datasets.
TTreeReader()
Default constructor. Call SetTree to connect to a TTree.

A more complete example including error handling and a few combinations of TTreeReaderValue and TTreeReaderArray would look like this:

#include <TFile.h>
#include <TH1.h>
#include <TTreeReader.h>
#include "TriggerInfo.h"
#include "Muon.h"
#include "Tau.h"
#include <vector>
#include <iostream>
bool CheckValue(ROOT::Internal::TTreeReaderValueBase& value) {
if (value.GetSetupStatus() < 0) {
std::cerr << "Error " << value.GetSetupStatus()
<< "setting up reader for " << value.GetBranchName() << '\n';
return false;
}
return true;
}
// Analyze the tree "MyTree" in the file passed into the function.
// Returns false in case of errors.
bool analyze(TFile* file) {
// Create a TTreeReader named "MyTree" from the given TDirectory.
// The TTreeReader gives access to the TTree to the TTreeReaderValue and
// TTreeReaderArray objects. It knows the current entry number and knows
// how to iterate through the TTree.
TTreeReader reader("MyTree", file);
// Read a single float value in each tree entries:
TTreeReaderValue<float> weight(reader, "event.weight");
// Read a TriggerInfo object from the tree entries:
TTreeReaderValue<TriggerInfo> triggerInfo(reader, "triggerInfo");
//Read a vector of Muon objects from the tree entries:
TTreeReaderValue<std::vector<Muon>> muons(reader, "muons");
//Read the pT for all jets in the tree entry:
TTreeReaderArray<double> jetPt(reader, "jets.pT");
// Read the taus in the tree entry:
TTreeReaderArray<Tau> taus(reader, "taus");
// Now iterate through the TTree entries and fill a histogram.
TH1F("hist", "TTreeReader example histogram", 10, 0., 100.);
bool firstEntry = true;

}
// Access the TriggerInfo object as if it's a pointer.
if (!triggerInfo->hasMuonL1())

// Ditto for the vector<Muon>.
if (!muons->size())

Base class of TTreeReaderValue.
ESetupStatus GetSetupStatus() const

kOnlyPrepStep

Used to request that the class specific implementation of TObject::Write just prepare the objects to be ready to be written but do not actually write them into the TBuffer.

This is just for example by TBufferMerger to request that the TTree inside the file calls TTree::FlushBaskets (outside of the merging lock) and TBufferMerger will later ask for the write (inside the merging lock). To take advantage of this feature the class needs to overload TObject::Write and use this enum value accordingly. (See TTree::Write and TObject::Write) Do not use, this feature will be migrate to the Merge function (See TClass and TTree::Merge)

Member Function Documentation

◆ AbstractMethod()

void TObject::AbstractMethod ( const char * method) const
inherited

Call this function within a function that you don't want to define as purely virtual, in order not to force all users deriving from that class to implement that maybe (on their side) unused function; but at the same time, emit a run-time warning if they try to call it, telling that it is not implemented in the derived class: action must thus be taken on the user side to override it.

In other word, this method acts as a "runtime purely virtual" warning instead of a "compiler purely virtual" error.

Warning
This interface is a legacy function that is no longer recommended to be used by new development code.
Note
The name "AbstractMethod" does not imply that it's an abstract method in the strict C++ sense.

◆ Browse()

◆ CheckedHash()

ULong_t TObject::CheckedHash ( )
inlineinherited

Check and record whether this class has a consistent Hash/RecursiveRemove setup (*) and then return the regular Hash value for this object.

The intent is for this routine to be called instead of directly calling the function Hash during "insert" operations. See TObject::HasInconsistenTObjectHash();

(*) The setup is consistent when all classes in the class hierarchy that overload TObject::Hash do call ROOT::CallRecursiveRemoveIfNeeded in their destructor. i.e. it is safe to call the Hash virtual function during the RecursiveRemove operation.

Definition TROOT.h:406

Otherwise, when RecursiveRemove is called (by ~TObject or example) for this type of object, the transversal of THashList and THashTable containers will will have to be done without call Hash (and hence be linear rather than logarithmic complexity). You will also see warnings like

Error in <ROOT::Internal::TCheckHashRecursiveRemoveConsistency::CheckRecursiveRemove>: The class SomeName overrides
TObject::Hash but does not call TROOT::RecursiveRemove in its destructor.

inlineinherited

Return true is the type of this object is known to have an inconsistent setup for Hash and RecursiveRemove (i.e.

missing call to RecursiveRemove in destructor).

Note: Since the consistency is only tested for during inserts, this routine will return true for object that have never been inserted whether or not they have a consistent setup. This has no negative side-effect as searching for the object with the right or wrong Hash will always yield a not-found answer (Since anyway no hash can be guaranteed unique, there is always a check)

void TObject::Paint ( Option_t * option = "")
virtualinherited

This method must be overridden if a class wants to paint itself.

◆ SaveAs()

void TObject::SaveAs ( const char * filename = "",
Option_t * option = "" ) const
virtualinherited

Save this object in the file specified by filename.

  • if "filename" contains ".root" the object is saved in filename as root binary file.
  • if "filename" contains ".xml" the object is saved in filename as a xml ascii file.
  • if "filename" contains ".cc" the object is saved in filename as C code independent from ROOT. The code is generated via SavePrimitive(). Specific code should be implemented in each object to handle this option. Like in TF1::SavePrimitive().
  • otherwise the object is written to filename as a CINT/C++ script. The C++ code to rebuild this object is generated via SavePrimitive(). The "option" parameter is passed to SavePrimitive. By default it is an empty string. It can be used to specify the Draw option in the code generated by SavePrimitive.

    The function is available via the object context menu.

Definition at line 1204 of file TObject.cxx.

◆ SetEntriesRange()

TTreeReader::EEntryStatus TTreeReader::SetEntriesRange ( Long64_t beginEntry,
Long64_t endEntry )

Set the range of entries to be loaded by Next(); end will not be loaded.

If end <= begin, end is ignored (set to -1, i.e. will run on all entries from begin onwards).

Example:

reader.SetEntriesRange(3, 5);
while (reader.Next()) {
// Will load entries 3 and 4.
}

Note that if a TEntryList is present, beginEntry and endEntry refer to the beginEntry-th/endEntry-th entries of the TEntryList (or the main TEntryList in case it has sub-entrylists). In other words, SetEntriesRange can be used to only loop over part of the TEntryList, but not to further restrict the actual TTree/TChain entry numbers considered.

Parameters
beginEntryThe first entry to be loaded by Next().
endEntryThe entry where Next() will return false, not loading it.

Definition at line 526 of file TTreeReader.cxx.

◆ SetEntry()

EEntryStatus TTreeReader::SetEntry ( Long64_t entry)
inline

Set the next entry (or index of the TEntryList if that is set).

Parameters
entryIf not TEntryList is set, the entry is a global entry (i.e. not the entry number local to the chain's current tree).
Returns
the entry's read status, i.e. whether the entry is available.

Definition at line 218 of file TTreeReader.h.

◆ SetEntryBase()

TTreeReader::EEntryStatus TTreeReader::SetEntryBase ( Long64_t entry,
bool local )
protected

Load an entry into the tree, return the status of the read.

For chains, entry is the global (i.e. not tree-local) entry number, unless local is true, in which case entry specifies the entry number within the current tree. This is needed for instance for TSelector::Process().

Definition at line 629 of file TTreeReader.cxx.

◆ SetLocalEntry()

EEntryStatus TTreeReader::SetLocalEntry ( Long64_t entry)
inline

Set the next local tree entry.

If a TEntryList is set, this function is equivalent to SetEntry().

Parameters
entryEntry number of the TChain's current TTree. This is the entry number passed for instance by TSelector::Process(entry), i.e. within TSelector::Process() always use SetLocalEntry() and not SetEntry()!
Returns
the entry's read status, i.e. whether the entry is available.

Definition at line 228 of file TTreeReader.h.

◆ SetObjectStat()

void TObject::SetObjectStat ( Bool_t stat)
staticinherited

Turn on/off tracking of objects in the TObjectTable.

Definition at line 1188 of file TObject.cxx.

◆ SetProxies()

bool TTreeReader::SetProxies ( )
protected

Tell readers we now have a tree.

fValues gets insertions during this loop (when parametrized arrays are read), invalidating iterators. Use old-school counting instead.

Definition at line 372 of file TTreeReader.cxx.

◆ Write() [2/2]

Int_t TObject::Write ( const char * name = nullptr,
Int_t option = 0,
Int_t bufsize = 0 ) const
virtualinherited

Write this object to the current directory.

The data structure corresponding to this object is serialized. The corresponding buffer is written to the current directory with an associated key with name "name".

Writing an object to a file involves the following steps:

  • Creation of a support TKey object in the current directory. The TKey object creates a TBuffer object.
  • The TBuffer object is filled via the class::Streamer function.
  • If the file is compressed (default) a second buffer is created to hold the compressed buffer.
  • Reservation of the corresponding space in the file by looking in the TFree list of free blocks of the file.
  • The buffer is written to the file.

Bufsize can be given to force a given buffer size to write this object. By default, the buffersize will be taken from the average buffer size of all objects written to the current file so far.

If a name is specified, it will be the name of the key. If name is not given, the name of the key will be the name as returned by GetName().

The option can be a combination of: kSingleKey, kOverwrite or kWriteDelete Using the kOverwrite option a previous key with the same name is overwritten. The previous key is deleted before writing the new object. Using the kWriteDelete option a previous key with the same name is deleted only after the new object has been written. This option is safer than kOverwrite but it is slower. NOTE: Neither kOverwrite nor kWriteDelete reduces the size of a TFile– the space is simply freed up to be overwritten; in the case of a TTree, it is more complicated. If one opens a TTree, appends some entries, then writes it out, the behaviour is effectively the same. If, however, one creates a new TTree and writes it out in this way, only the metadata is replaced, effectively making the old data invisible without deleting it. TTree::Delete() can be used to mark all disk space occupied by a TTree as free before overwriting its metadata this way. The kSingleKey option is only used by TCollection::Write() to write a container with a single key instead of each object in the container with its own key.

An object is read from the file into memory via TKey::Read() or via TObject::Read().

The function returns the total number of bytes written to the file. It returns 0 if the object cannot be written.

Reimplemented in TBuffer, TCollection, TDirectory, TDirectoryFile, TFile, TMap, TParallelMergingFile, TSQLFile, TTree, and TXMLFile.
