TCollection Class Referenceabstract

Collection abstract base class.

This class describes the base protocol all collection classes have to implement. The ROOT collection classes always store pointers to objects that inherit from TObject. They never adopt the objects. Therefore, it is the user's responsibility to take care of deleting the actual objects once they are not needed anymore. In exceptional cases, when the user is 100% sure nothing else is referencing the objects in the collection, one can delete all objects and the collection at the same time using the Delete() function.

Collections can be iterated using an iterator object (see TIterator). Depending on the concrete collection class there may be some additional methods of iterating. See the respective classes.

TCollection inherits from TObject since we want to be able to have collections of collections.

In a later release the collections may become templatized.

The following describes how you can access the elements in case an interface returns a ROOT collection type such as TList or TObjArray. These type of ROOT collections hold pointers to TObject. In other words, to store an object in a ROOT collection, it must inherit from TObject. You can think of a TList as a std::list<TObject*>.

Note
For historical reasons, some of ROOT’s interfaces use ROOT’s own collection types such as TList and TObjArray. In modern code (within ROOT and your own), it's recommended to rather use std::array or std::vector etc. from the C++ Standard Library, and their standard iterators.

Traditional ways of iterating through these elements rely on the use of TIter, R__FOR_EACH, std::for_each, range-based for, TObjLink::Next or TList::After, as described in the 6 examples of TList documentation.

However, these ways of retrieval through the parent class TObject* are often not useful, since those pointers have to be cast back to the correct subclass. For instance, with TTree::GetListOfBranches(), you know that the derived class is of type TBranch*. For this purpose, ROOT offers a specific tools for range-based for loops: such as ROOT::RRangeCast, TRangeStaticCast and TRangeDynCast (in this example):
