Release 6.28/00 - 2023-02-04

Retracted

Due to a security vulnerability, this version of ROOT has been retracted; please upgrade to v6.28/10.

Highlights

With this release, cling was upgraded to use LLVM/clang 13; a future patch release will bring support for C++20.

We now offer rootssh user@remote-computer: it allows you to work on a remote computer (such as lxplus at CERN) and have e.g. TBrowser display locally, without X forwarding, automatically! Try it out with the new TBrowser and let us know if you see any issues.

A new binary rootreadspeed was added to measure realistic analysis I/O throughput: it allows you to find reading bottlenecks for analyses, whether using multiple files, multiple threads, or even only selected branches of some or multiple trees. RDatasetSpec allows you to associate meta data with files, and pass that to RDataFrame: cross-section, weights, sample name (“H2bb”, “MC”), and virtually anything else are then available as “columns”. The new, accelerating batch mode of RooFit is now passing all tests: we recommend to try it out! SOFIE model evaluation is now integrated with RDataFrame, allowing fast inference without extra dependencies, seamlessly integrated in your analysis.

If you are interested to see what the near future will bring to ROOT, consider having a look at RNTuple: its features are growing; once the key features are available it will become the successor to TTree. All major experiments are planning to switch - it is happening! (No worries, we will continue to maintain TTree.)

Git

The entire ROOT source can be obtained from our public Git repository:

git clone https://github.com/root-project/root.git

The release specific tag can be obtained using:

cd root
git checkout -b v6-28-00 v6-28-00

Windows

Windows 10/7/… are supported. We offer two packaging types:

  • exe: a regular Windows installer package also setting up the required environment variables. With uninstall via “Control Panel” / “Add or Remove Programs”. Simply download and start. You can double-click ROOT to run it; ROOT files get registered with Windows.
  • tar: unpack e.g. with 7zip. Start ROOT in a Microsoft Visual Studio Prompt (in Start / Programs / Microsoft Visual Studio / Tools). If you installed ROOT to C:\root then call C:\root\bin\thisroot.bat before using ROOT to set up required environment variables.

Important installation notes

  • You must download the binary built with the exact same version of Visual Studio than the one installed on your system.
  • Do not untar in a directory with a name containing blank characters.
  • Take the release version if performance matters.
  • If you want to debug your code you need the ROOT debug build (you cannot mix release / debug builds due to a Microsoft restriction).
