I have been running the svn version of ROOT since 2007 on my 32bit Gentoo GNU/Linux. I have never encountered any problems.

I followed the instructions on the root website and I compile root with gcc 4.3.3, but I don't think there should be any problems with any gcc 4.X version. I did have to supply some arguments to the configure script to be able to use some features that rely on external libraries.

$> ./configure --help

gave me all the information I needed.
