User defined cursors

Hi again! A question about cursors.
It is simple to set the mouse pointer shape according to the context
(arrows, hands, and so on) by gPad->SetCursor(cursor) where cursor is
kBottomLeft, kHand, and so on. You are just limited by the 18 predefined cursors.
Is it possible to define one's own shapes? Looking at ROOT code and documentation, I saw that for this kind of "low level" problems, ROOT defines an interface to the underlying graphics system
(X11, for linux) (see TVirtualX.h).

Unhappily, following the exact mechanism was difficult and time consuming, so I gave up.
Any hint?
Thanks!
Ciao
Giorgio
