Hello Adrian,
I think ROOT "configure" misses "lib64" directory indeed. I'll fix it.
Mean time you can force ROOT to look up the right place by providing the QTDIR env variable explicitly.

Please to define

   export QTDIR=/usr/lib64/qt4

See http://root.bnl.gov/QtRoot/How2Install4Unix.html also It provides the recommended way to install Qt plugin for ROOT. You may realize that you can complement your existing REOOT installation with QtRoot layer. There is no reason to re-build the entire ROOT.
