ROOT latex is different on many points. I think that is a minor problem.

But can this "confusion" be fixed? In original (Knuth) TeX one doesn't
have to bother about placing _ or ^ with empty sub(super)script to get
correct placing. Are the ROOT TLatex algorithm and TeX algorithm very
different?
