thank you very much for your prompt replies. My use case is the following: I would like to make available an initialization macro that guarantees a uniform style (throughout a collaboration for instance).

To assure maximum flexibility, I would like that users can call that macro
A) right from their rootlogon.C, or
B) if they prefer their own settings for private work, but need the official style only occasionally for some plots, also after having done some work in the same session.

In particular it should be possible that macros used by many people call the style macro at the beginning, which then erases whatever private settings the user already has defined. Hence the Reset inside the macro, which, however, should be callable *also* from within rootlogon.C for case A above!

I hope that makes more sense now. If you tell me this is against the ROOT philosophy, I'll accept that. Do you see any alternative solutions to the above task?
