Dear Christian,
Great your answer covers all my concerns.

Can I also endorse your suggestion? This would really avoid duplicating
fonts just for ROOT.
PAIPIX (http://aamorimsrv.fis.fc.ul.pt/) is a linux live DVD remastered from KNOPPIX that includes ROOT and many other scientific and technical packages. The iso file is available form the machine above but I could try to copy it also to some computer at CERN if people are interested.
All the best,
Antonio Amorim
