Hi Phil,
I had this problem a while back, it's due to some SRT (Software Release 
Tools - used by MINOS) weirdness.

I overcame this problem by using a completely clean shell (as suggested 
by Brett Viren I think) that hasn't been touched by SRT. You can check 
if your shell is "infected" by doing printenv | grep SRT.
