I suspect you are running your own ROOT-like Windows based application.
By some reason that 0.5 cm band is not filled with a "status bar" properly.
The later may not have been created or painted .

The only problem by now, one still has to implement this
on his/her own ( or ask some software company to do this job :-)
It should not be a problem for you since your applications are not
High Energy Physics related are they ?
The problem is to find a fund to do that and to maintain it in future.
In fact the last point is crucial.
So it is a business problem rather the technical one.
The main physics work horse is a Linux box nowadays.
