Hi Philippe,
Thanks for having a look.
When I run the macro from a root session it works. I have histograms,
as you have seen, and I can read them, plot them etc.
When I quit that root session, start a new one,
and read in the file test.root all it contains is the directory.
*** Unlike your test, there were no histograms in the root file ***
*** when opened in a new root session. ***
Similarly, if I compile the macro and run it as an executable all
I have in the test.root file is the directory.
What I want to have is a permanent record of these histograms in the
root file so they can be accessed at a later date. This is why I think
I do not understand the scope rules. I am not saving anything.
