  OpenGL ROOT viewer has two "light models" deployed:

   1. "Native" light
   2. " Artificial" light

One can switch between them pressing the key "t" of the keyboard.
What you need is a native light. It is provided with > 256 colors display only.

Please check what is your current option "Native/ Artificial" and what is your current
X-terminal color capability. It should be > 256 colors.
