• 1991-1994: Scattered FORTRAN reconstruction, simulation and analysis code

• 1994-1995: Reconstruction/analysis package in C

• 1996-now: ROOT/C++ everywhere - PhAT

• Small collaboration -> radical decisions (i.e. 97% of collaboration had never seen a C++ program)
